Chair Yoga and exercise for the elderly with Dementia

Apr 5, 2024

Dementia is a complex condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can cause a range of symptoms, including memory loss, confusion, and difficulty with daily activities. While there is no cure for dementia, there are many ways to manage its symptoms and improve quality of life. One such way is through the practice of chair yoga.

Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that can be done while sitting in a chair. It can provide a range of physical, mental, and emotional benefits, making it an ideal practice for people with dementia. In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of chair yoga for dementia and how to get started.

How Chair Yoga Helps People with Dementia:

Chair yoga is a low-impact exercise that can be done by people of all ages and abilities. It can be especially beneficial for people with dementia, as it can:

  • Improve Flexibility: Chair yoga helps to improve flexibility, range of motion, and balance. This can reduce the risk of falls and improve overall physical function.
  • Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Yoga is known to reduce stress and anxiety levels, which can be especially beneficial for people with dementia who may experience heightened levels of anxiety.
  • Improve Sleep: Chair yoga can help to improve sleep quality, which is important for overall health and well-being.
  • Improve Mood: Regular practice of chair yoga can help to improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression.
  • Increased circulation, respiration, and range of motion, helping to prevent falls and prolong mobility.
  • Greater ability to deal with pain.
  • Increased focus on one’s strengths and remaining abilities.
  • Enhanced sense of well-being.
  • Improved self-regulation and emotional regulation.

In a single-blind controlled study of the effects of yoga on elderly populations, researchers found that the group who practiced yoga “showed significant improvement in immediate and delayed recall of verbal and visual memory, attention and working memory, verbal fluency, executive function, and processing speed.” The participants practiced together daily for one month, then three times per week for three months, and then on their own for six months (participants were encouraged to practice daily).

This study is one of only a few designed to test the efficacy of yoga in eldercare settings; however, there is a robust body of research on how breathing practices and meditation can benefit both brain and nervous system function. And from my own experience as a yoga teacher, I’ve noticed that yoga can provide a significant improvement in mood, cognition, and memory for people living with dementia.

Furthermore, yoga teaches us to be in the present moment, and when living with memory loss associated with dementia, life is all about the moment.

Our Chair Yoga Classes

We have years of experience working with participants with Dementia. We ensure that every person in the class feels included and accepted. We nurture your strengths and gently encourage you to find confidence and joy in the many different poses in the chair. We use a range of equipment so classes have that sensory element as well as many other exercise benefits. Including breathwork and meditation throughout the class stimulates a positive sense of inward connection to the body, mind and soul.
